Self Containment Certification

In our quieter times we can offer to assist with  Self Containment work on your caravan .
but in our busy season we do have kits and made up tanks plus most fittings required for the DIY Self Containment

Once the required Self Containment work has been done to your caravan  your caravan needs to be certified by an independant inspector

Certification is valid for 4 years at which time it will then need to be re inspected.

It is a requirement of joining the NZMCA that new members certify their vehicle.

The NZMCA inspector will still certify a vehicle if you are not a NZMCA member but there is a fee for his services.

There are many benefits of being a NZMCA member one of them. Is having to their DOC & remote camping sites being.

If you do not wish to become a member but if you do a lot of Freedom camping then self containment may be very beneficial to you.

It’s all about looking after the environment and cherishing our countryside.

What is Certified Self Containment?

Certified Self Containment is maintaining and certifying your motor caravan in accordance with the New Zealand Standard for Self Containment of Motor Caravans and Caravans, NZS 5465:2001.

The creation of the Standard was spearheaded by the NZMCA to provide a solution to the increasing problems associated with the use of caravans & Motor homes and the disposal of waste. The NZMCA encourages all motor home and caravan owners to make their vehicles self contained, and help protect the environment and public health from indiscriminate waste disposal.

A self containment vehicle is designed to completely meet the ablutionary and sanitary needs of the occupants (including water for drinking and cooking) for a minimum of three days without requiring any external services or discharging any waste.

Waste water is collected in holding tanks then disposed of via a dump station. Dump stations are connected to reticulated sewerage or septic tank systems, therefore the treatments used in the waste water must be approved toilet chemicals or treatments that do not affect the operation of these systems.

The Standard requires sanitary and safe installation of the following: (basic list)

  1. Fresh water supply: 4L per person per day for 3 days (i.e. minimum 12L per person)
  2. A sink
  3. Toilet: 1L per person per day for 3 days (i.e. minimum 3L net holding tank capacity per person)
  4. Holding tank: 4L per person per day for 3 days (i.e. minimum 12L per person ) and monitored if capacity is less than the fresh water tank
  5. An evacuation hose
  6. A sealable refuse container (with lid)
